UNDERSTANDING MICRONUTRIENTS (VITAMINS & MINERALS)
Micronutrients:
• Micronutrients are essential nutrients that are required by our body in small amounts for proper functioning and overall health.
• They are needed in smaller amounts as compared to macronutrients but they are no less important.
• There are two main categories of micronutrients:
(i) Vitamins
(ii) Minerals
Vitamins:
• Vitamins are organic compounds that are necessary for various biochemical processes in the body.
• Vitamins are further classified into two groups:
(a) Fat-soluble vitamins:
- These include vitamins A, D, E, and K, which
are soluble in fat and can be stored in the
body's fatty tissues.
(b) Water-soluble vitamins:
- This group includes vitamin C and B-complex
vitamins.
- Water-soluble vitamins are not stored in the
body and need to be consumed regularly as
they are easily excreted.
Minerals:
• Minerals are inorganic elements that play crucial roles in various bodily functions.
• Some common minerals include calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, zinc, iodine, selenium, and copper.
•
Minerals are essential for maintaining proper fluid balance, nerve function, muscle contraction, bone health, and enzyme activity, among other functions.
From Where We Can Get Micronutrients?:
• Micronutrients are obtained through a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, dairy products, nuts, and seeds.
• Deficiencies or imbalances in micronutrients can lead to various health problems, so it is important to maintain an adequate intake of these essential nutrients for optimal health.
