DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BMR, RMR, MAINTENANCE CALORIES, & TDEE

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR):

  • "Basal Metabolic Rate" measures the minimum amount of calories that your body needs to perform necessary functions.
  • These necessary functions include:
pumping blood, digesting food, breathing, keeping a stable body temperature, growing hair and skin, etc.

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR):

  • RMR is the extended version of BMR.
  • "Resting Metabolic Rate" measures the amount of energy that your body needs to function while at rest.
  • It includes the energy which is spent by your body while performing necessary functions but it also includes the energy that your body spends via basic physical activities.
•These basic physical activities include: eating, sitting, standing, walking for short periods, using the washroom, shivering, etc.

Maintenance Calories:

  • "Maintenance Calories" is the total amount of energy that your body spends in a whole day.
  • "Maintenance Calories" have 3 major components:
    (i) BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).
(ii) Calories that you burn via Physical Activities.
        (a) Basic Physical Activities
        (b) Major Physical Activities
(iii) Calories that you burn by Digesting Food.

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE):

  • Both the terms, "Maintenance Calories" and "Total Daily Energy Expenditure" mean exactly the same thing.
  • TDEE is just a synonym for "Maintenance Calories".
  • I hope that from now onwards you will not get confused between these 4 terminologies, which are most commonly used in Fitness Industry.
